A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a body contouring surgery that gives individuals the fuller appearance they want. So, what is a BBL, and how long does it last? Our friendly professionals offer answers to these questions and more when you schedule a consultation at our facility. Learn more about this procedure and how to maintain your shape after a BBL in Tucson, AZ.

What is a BBL, and should I get one?

There are a lot of reasons why someone would want to achieve a curvier backside. Weight loss and natural aging can lead to a flat or deflated bottom, or perhaps it has always seemed flat. A BBL uses fat from your body to boost volume in the area. This fat is usually taken from the abdominal area using liposuction, then purified before being injected into the buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Rao will confirm you have enough fat to undergo the process.

A Brazilian butt lift is often chosen as an alternative to getting butt implants, which require more extensive surgery. Butt implants also require a much longer recovery time with some pain and swelling. With a BBL, the injection sites are nearly invisible, and downtime is minimal. If you don’t have enough fat to meet your cosmetic goals, however, you may not be a candidate for this procedure. It is also important to have good skin laxity and realistic goals about your outcome.

How is a BBL performed?

Since a Brazilian butt lift uses your fat during the procedure, results look and feel completely natural. It takes about 3 – 4 hours to complete the surgery, based on the amount of fat being removed and transferred. In most cases, anesthesia will be used. Liposuction is used to remove fat from the abdominal area, hips, or thighs before being purified in a closed system. The tissue is then carefully placed into syringes.

Next is the fat injection to the buttocks, where the harvested fat tissue is placed in layers to achieve the right look. A delicate massage may be applied to make sure the surface is completely even. The process is repeated as many times as necessary until the perfect shape has been attained. Unlike butt implants, there is very little risk of infection or other complications, such as an allergic reaction.

How long does a BBL last?

After the fat transfer to the buttocks, there will be a brief period of observation to monitor your progress before being sent home. Keep in mind that two separate areas of the body require healing — the buttocks and the place where the fat was removed. Dr. Rao or an administrative team member will give you instructions about incision care and ask that you not place any weight on the backside for at least two weeks. After the swelling goes down, your bottom will begin to appear fuller and shapelier. Not only that, but the area that had liposuction will seem slimmer.

So, how long does a BBL last?

Although a small amount of natural fat may be reabsorbed after the transfer, the majority of the cells can maintain their new positions. It is important to keep a steady weight as this may compromise the results of your procedure. By the end of the recovery process, you should be able to enjoy your results for years to come.
