A common question I am asked when patients come to my office in Tucson, Arizona for a breast augmentation consultation is, “What size implant should I choose?” There are several things to consider when choosing breast implants. The process of picking out implants starts with taking measurements of your breasts.

I take a number of measurements including base width, the distance from your breast fold to your nipple, and the amount of soft tissue in the upper pole of your breast. The base width measurement helps us to determine the width and profile of the implant that will work best for your breast. The distance of your nipple to your breast fold helps me determine the elasticity of your breast tissue and what profile of implant can be accommodated by your breast. The amount of soft tissue and breast tissue in your upper pole helps to determine whether the breast implant should be placed beneath the muscle or on top of the muscle. The goal is to match the breast implants that would best suit your body type with breast implants that will achieve your aesthetic goals.

Once the measurements have been taken I have my patients put on a sports bra and try on different breast implants using our implant sizing system. Trying the implant sizers can help give you an idea of what your new breasts will look like after your breast augmentation. The decision to pick an implant does not have to be made the day of your consultation. I encourage patients to come back to the office to try on implants and to bring a friend or significant other to help them with their decision. As you can see, choosing the right breast implants for each individual patient is a blend of art and science to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
